
Pokémon(an abbreviation for Pocket Monsters in Japan) is a Japanese media franchise
managed by The Pokémon Company, founded by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures. The franchise was
created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996, and is centered around fictional creatures called "Pokémon". In
Pokémon, Pokémon Trainers are people who catch, train, care for, and battle with Pokémon. The English
slogan for the franchise is "Gotta Catch 'Em All!". There are currently 1008 Pokémon species.
The Pokémon franchise began as Pocket Monsters: Red and Green (later released outside of Japan as
Pokémon Red and Blue), a pair of video games for the original Game Boy handheld system that were
developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo in February 1996. Pokémon soon became a media mix
franchise adapted into various different media, with the Pokémon Trading Card Game released in October
1996, the Pokémon Adventures manga first released in Japan in March 1997, and the Pocket Monsters:
Original Series released in April 1997. Pocket Pikachu was released in Japan in March 1998, with the
July 18: with the first ever Pokémon movie, Pokémon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, first released
in Japan in July 1998.


Great Ball
The Great Ball (Japanese: スーパーボール Super Ball) is a type of Poké Ball introduced in Generation I. It is an improved variant of the regular Poké Ball that can be used to catch wild Pokémon.

Master Ball
The Master Ball (Japanese: マスターボール Master Ball) is a type of Poké Ball introduced in Generation I. It can be used to catch a wild Pokémon without fail. It was invented by the Silph Co.

Net Ball
The Net Ball (Japanese: ネットボール Net Ball) is a type of Poké Ball introduced in Generation III. It can be used to catch a wild Pokémon, being more likely to succeed against a Water and Bug type Pokémon.

Ultra Ball
The Ultra Ball (Japanese: ハイパーボール Hyper Ball) is a type of Poké Ball introduced in Generation I. It is an improved variant of the Great Ball that can be used to catch wild Pokémon.

Lure Ball
The Lure Ball (Japanese: ルアーボール Lure Ball) is a type of Poké Ball introduced in Generation II. It can be used to catch a wild Pokémon, being more likely to succeed in fishing encounters.

Quick Ball
First introduced in Sinnoh in the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl video games, the Quick Ball is a blue Poké Ball with a yellow X-like design. If used at the start of a wild Pokémon encounter, the likelihood of capturing the Pokémon is greatly increased.

Dive Ball
The Dive Ball (Japanese: ダイブボール Dive Ball) is a type of Poké Ball introduced in Generation III. It can be used to catch a wild Pokémon, being more likely to succeed in water encounters, originally specifically underwater encounters
